Case Study 2
Drafting the content for the Pensions Board e-learning training course for pension scheme Trustees
Background
With the introduction of legislation regarding compulsory trustee training pending and feedback from existing trustees about the difficulties in terms of the costs and time involved in attending classroom style training, the Pensions Board invited tenders to draft the content for an e-learning training course for trustees. Following a public procurement process, Attain Consulting was successful in being awarded the tender to write the content.
The approach
The key elements of the project involved:
- Reviewing and documenting existing information regarding trustee roles and responsibilities including other websites, the Pensions Board Trustee Handbook and other guidance booklets.
- Developing a high level specification for the course material incorporating the key topics to be covered taking into account legal requirements and best practice.
- Designing headings and sub sections, key messages, format of material and the graphics to be used for each page.
- Drafting the content for each topic including designing interactive tools and assessment questionnaires at the end of section.
The outcome
The e-learning system which allows new and experienced trustees to train online at their own pace and free of charge was successfully launched in September 2009. The interactive e-learning course covers all aspects of trustee education, from being a trustee, to investing a scheme's assets, to member communication. There are modules for trustees of DC and DB schemes, with interactive quizzes and a short assessment at the end of end of each lesson. Users who successfully complete the training course and pass the assessment receive a certification of completion from the Pensions Board and CPD hours.
